Frequently asked questions

What's the right age for my child to start riding a scooter?

Most kids can safely start using a three-wheeled scooter around the age of 2 to 3, as these scooters allow them to master steering and acceleration without having to worry so much about balance. As they develop their balance and coordination skills, though, you can move them up to a two-wheeled model. This usually happens around the age of 5 to 6, although some children may be ready before or after this age.

E-scooters are generally considered best for kids who have mastered all of these skills and can effectively use a brake pedal, so around the age of 7 years +. However, we recommend going to a showroom so you and your child can test out the scooters for yourselves and see what the best option for them is.

Should I get my child a kick scooter or an electric scooter?

Whether you should get your child a kick scooter or an electric scooter depends on their age, confidence, and where you're planning on letting them ride. Kick scooters are ideal for younger kids and casual play around the local streets and parks, while e-scooters are often suited better to older, more responsible riders.

We recommend checking the age range for the scooters you're considering, as this will often give you a good idea of whether it's a suitable option for your child or not. E-scooters are excellent for commuting to school and to friends' houses, but they can also pose more dangers to inexperienced riders. Kick scooters tend to be cheaper, but they might also not offer as much fun and thrill as e-scooters. Which type you choose all depends on your child, their age, and confidence level.

Are scooters safe for kids?

Yes, with proper supervision and safety gear, scooters are a fun and safe way for kids to boost their balance, coordination, and confidence skills. It's important that you keep an eye on your little one while they're still learning to ride their scooter, so you can help them should they fall or have an incident. This is especially true for e-scooters, but kick scooters can be dangerous when unsupervised, too.

We highly recommend getting your child safety gear to wear while riding, and make sure they keep it on while they play. Safety gear includes:

  • A secure, safety-tested helmet
  • Elbow and knee pads
  • Wrist guards
  • Suitable clothing (e.g. long sleeves to protect skin)
  • High visibility gear, especially when riding in low-light conditions

Make sure your child knows exactly how to ride their scooter properly, and keep an eye on them while they're still getting to grips with their new gear. As long as they use the scooter properly, it should be very safe for them to enjoy.

What kind of scooter is best for beginners?

For little ones, we highly recommend a three-wheeled scooter as it offers extra stability and takes some of the pressure off the learner rider. While it seems quite simple to us, children can have a difficult time learning all the moving parts of riding a scooter. For example, on a two-wheel scooter, they'll need to learn how to steer, kick, and balance all at the same time. When starting off with a three-wheel scooter, one of these moving parts is taken care of for them. Once your child has mastered steering and kicking to move, they can graduate to a two-wheeler and start perfecting their balance skill.

Can scooters be used at skate parks?

Yes, scooters can absolutely be used at a skate park! However, you might need to look at what scooter your child is using, as not all of them are suitable for the impact of skate park riding. For example, three-wheel scooters often have decks lower to the ground for added stability, but this can get in the way of ramps and jumps on the landing, and potentially even break the scooter. If your child wants to learn how to ride and perform tricks at the skate park, make sure you get them a stunt or trick scooter.

How do I maintain a kick scooter?

Kick scooters tend to be rather maintenance-free, which is why they're such a hit with parents and kids! However, to make sure you're getting the most out of your kick scooter and that it's running as smoothly and safely as possible, we recommend getting the brakes checked and bolts tightened regularly. You can either do this at home or take it to a professional who will help keep your scooter maintained. Also, we recommend cleaning the wheels every few weeks to prevent them from sticking or getting clogged with dirt. If your kids' scooter has adjustable handlebars, check that they lock securely before each ride.
