You can buy a trike at any age, but children might not be ready to ride it before the age of two or three years. Trikes have three wheels so they offer better support and stability for children who aren't completely confident with their balance enough for a bike yet, so they're an excellent choice to bridge the gap between balance bikes and two-wheelers.
The main difference between a trike and a balance bike is that the former has pedals while the latter doesn't. The main goal of a balance bike is to teach young children how to balance and improve their core strength while trikes can teach a range of riding skills such as pedalling, braking, and steering. While trikes also help with balance, they're often more difficult for children to control until they're slightly older.
